About GRIOT THEATER COMPANY

Griot Theater Company is a Sausalito-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit theatre organization dedicated to celebrating artists of color and empowering Marin City youth through intergenerational storytelling, education, and entrepreneurial leadership. The company produces community-rooted stage productions, year-round ensembles and workshops, and a recurring Oratorical program that centers Black and Brown cultural narratives and student voice. Since its founding in the early 2020s, Griot has partnered with local schools and venues across Marin County, sustained regular programming into 2024–2026, and taken company members on national performance opportunities to broaden participants’ artistic exposure.

Notable achievements

Apollo Theater performance (2024)

Led an intergenerational trip to New York City in 2024 where 28 company members performed at the Apollo Theater, providing students and company members with national-stage experience and expanded arts exposure.

Annual Oratorical series

Operates a recurring Oratorical competition and public-speaking pathway (the 6th annual event was presented in February 2026) that trains and showcases Marin City youth on themes tied to Black cultural leaders and civic history.

Community-rooted productions and youth ensembles

Developed and staged original and adapted works (examples include Straight Outta Grover’s Corner and How the Grinch Stole Kwanzaa) using Conservatory and Young Griot ensembles and partnering with local school venues such as Tamalpais High School’s Caldwell Theater to reach regional audiences.
