About WE MUST PROTECT

We Must Protect (WMP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by Tulsi Gabbard in 2021 and activated for large-scale disaster response in 2023 following the Lahaina/Maui wildfires. WMP focuses on rapid emergency relief (communications, generators, medical kits and supplies), longer-term rebuilding through its "Operation Rebuild" program, and public education and advocacy aimed at supporting vulnerable communities. Since 2023 the organization has expanded its fundraising and program activity — including on-the-ground relief in Maui and multi-home rebuild projects after Hurricane Helene — and maintains formal charity registration in Hawaii and an active national presence via its website and volunteer programs.

Notable achievements

Maui wildfire emergency response

Activated in August 2023 to respond to the Lahaina and Upcountry Kula wildfires; mobilized volunteers to deliver life‑saving supplies and satellite communications equipment to restore emergency connectivity for affected communities.

Operation Rebuild — Hurricane Helene housing projects

Led a multi‑state rebuild effort after Hurricane Helene, beginning construction of five replacement homes in February 2025 and expanding to support additional families (reported work on 11 new build projects), while supplying generators, heaters, chainsaws, fuel and emergency medical kits to impacted households.

Significant fundraising growth (2024)

Reported a major increase in contributions in 2024 (nearly $1.0M in revenue for the year), enabling substantial program spending and grants to support relief and rebuild activities.
