National Trust for Local News
The National Trust for Local News is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to preserve and rebuild local journalism by acquiring, operating, and investing in community news organizations so they can serve their communities sustainably.
About National Trust for Local News
The National Trust for Local News (NTLN) is a national nonprofit news organization founded in 2021 that acquires and operates community newspapers and related local news services. It organizes state-level trusts (including Colorado, Maine, and Georgia) to run local newsrooms while providing shared services and infrastructure.
NTLN uses a hybrid model that pairs philanthropic investment with earned revenue (subscriptions, advertising, events and services) and builds shared infrastructure—such as centralized digital tools, advertising operations, and a community printing press—to help local news outlets scale and remain locally focused.
Notable achievements
Acquisition of Maine newspapers (Maine Trust)
In 2023 NTLN established the Maine Trust for Local News and purchased a portfolio of dailies and weeklies (including the Portland Press Herald and other Masthead Maine titles) to preserve statewide local news coverage.
Launch of the Trust Press (Colorado)
Opened a mission-driven commercial printing facility to lower production costs for community publishers and provide a regional printing solution for local and ethnic newspapers.
Expansion and philanthropic support for scale
Rapidly expanded operations across multiple states and secured major philanthropic backing to finance acquisitions, launches, and shared services while pursuing earned-revenue sustainability.
