World Forest ID Association is an international 501(c)(3) nonprofit that protects forests by creating science‑based methods to verify species and geographic origin of forest‑risk commodities. The organization collects georeferenced tree and plant samples and applies chemical, genetic and analytical techniques together with AI-enabled spatial models to make product source location and species identification auditable and defensible. World Forest ID operates as a consortium of research institutions and partners, collaborating with governments, enforcement agencies, companies and NGOs to support legal timber verification, improve corporate due diligence, and strengthen national testing capacity. In the past few years the organization has published peer‑reviewed research, secured grants to develop DNA barcoding protocols for timber, and expanded field collection and government collaborations in producing countries. The association positions itself as a public‑good science provider: building and maintaining a global reference library, developing non‑proprietary tools and protocols, and providing data and technical support that enforcement bodies and supply‑chain actors can use to reduce illegal and high‑risk sourcing of forest commodities.
