About EARTH LAB SF

E.A.R.T.H. Lab SF is a San Francisco–based nonprofit arts organization that produces environmental art, documentary films, research, and public programs focused on ecological and social justice. The organization intentionally centers marginalized communities (including LGBTQIA+ and communities of color) in its programming and seeks to combine artistic practice with community-engaged research. The organization is a tax-exempt public charity (EIN 86-2761295, recognized as 501(c)(3) since July 2021) and has an active program of film screenings, performances, workshops and site-based events. In the last 2–3 years E.A.R.T.H. Lab SF has released and toured feature documentary work, presented sold-out festival screenings, and received local public arts support for general operating activity (FY24).

Notable achievements

Frameline premiere — Playing With Fire

The feature documentary Playing With Fire (2025) premiered to a sold-out audience at Frameline (Roxie Theater) and has been a central part of the organization’s recent public programming and touring activity.

Produced multiple feature environmental justice films

Across recent years the Lab completed and circulated feature-length environmental justice films including Goodbye Gauley Mountain, Water Makes Us Wet, and Playing With Fire, using documentary screening + discussion formats to reach local and festival audiences.

Secured municipal arts funding (FY24)

E.A.R.T.H. Lab SF received San Francisco Grants for the Arts general operating support in FY24, enabling expanded programming, artist residencies, and community-facing events.
