About URBAN COMPASSION PROJECT

Urban Compassion Project (UCP) is an Oakland-based, donor-facing nonprofit that organizes volunteer cleanups, mutual-aid distributions, and outreach to people experiencing homelessness. Founded by local community organizers, the group partners with volunteers, businesses, and local agencies to remove illegally dumped waste, reduce public‑health hazards, and connect unhoused neighbors to services. UCP runs frequent community cleanups and a Homeless Ambassador Program that pays unhoused participants to report dumping and help maintain cleared sites. In addition to grassroots volunteer work, the organization has expanded to accept donations and corporate sponsorships and lists its EIN (86-2807260) and 501(c)(3) status on its official site.

Notable achievements

Large cumulative cleanup impact

Since its founding in 2021 UCP has mobilized thousands of volunteers and reported removing multiple thousands of tons of illegally dumped waste from Oakland streets, parks, and waterways (the organization and local press reported several thousand tons removed through 2025).

Major emergency cleanup (65+ tons)

In September 2025 UCP led an emergency response at a hazardous dumping site in Oakland, removing more than 65 tons of debris in a single operation with corporate partner support to fund disposal and equipment.

Volunteer mobilization and community programs

UCP has organized large volunteer events (hundreds to thousands of volunteers across projects), and runs a Homeless Ambassador Program that provides stipends to unhoused neighbors to monitor and maintain cleared areas, increasing long‑term site retention.
