About Pueblo Railway Foundation

The Pueblo Railway Foundation (PRF) is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) organization based in Pueblo, Colorado, that operates the Pueblo Railway Museum as its primary program. Formed in 2003 to continue and expand the work of the Pueblo Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society, the Foundation preserves rolling stock, artifacts, and local rail history and makes them accessible to the public through museum displays, restoration work, and operating train rides.

PRF emphasizes hands-on historical interpretation and education: it runs public train-ride events, partners with local schools and the public library for tours and programs, and maintains an active restoration program and digital cataloging effort for donated collections. The Foundation minimizes administrative overhead by relying on volunteers and focuses resources on preservation, restoration, and public programming.

In recent years the Foundation has expanded its digital and outreach work (including digitization of large donated collections) and continued a calendar of seasonal public events and community train rides that draw local families, students, and railfans.

Notable achievements

Sustained operation since 2003

Established in 2003 to continue the work of a predecessor historical society, the Foundation has built and maintained a volunteer-run museum and collection over two decades.

Major collection donation and digitization

Accepted a substantial estate donation of railroad photographs and artifacts (James N. Lhotak collection) and began a multi-year digitization and online-sharing effort to preserve and broaden access to the material (donation received October 2022; digitization underway).

Well-attended public programs

Operating seasonal train-ride events that draw significant local participation (for example, the Foundation reported nearly 150 riders at its Back to School event in September 2025) and sustained volunteer-led restoration work that keeps historic equipment operational for public rides.
