SAVE THE SLATE
Save the Slate is a Gunnison Valley grassroots nonprofit that inspires citizen participation and advocates for environmental defense, community preservation, and climate-change mitigation in the Slate River corridor and surrounding areas.
About SAVE THE SLATE
Save the Slate works to limit overdevelopment, protect Slate River wetlands and wildlife habitat, and promote smart-growth housing solutions for the Gunnison Valley community.
The organization combines community organizing, public-comment campaigns and local policy advocacy with on-the-ground habitat rehabilitation efforts (wetland restoration and monitoring) to protect water quality, wildlife and long-term community character.
Save the Slate is registered as a tax-exempt charitable organization (federal EIN provided by the user) and has been active in county land-use processes and local conservation initiatives in recent years.
Notable achievements
Influenced county home-size policy
Played a leading role in public outreach and comment efforts that contributed to Gunnison County changing the by-right residential aggregate home-size threshold (reducing administrative by-right allowances and increasing review for very large builds).
Built strong community mobilization
Organized petitions and membership mobilization that attracted substantial public participation on Slate River land-use decisions and elevated wetland-protection concerns in local hearings.
Initiated wetland rehabilitation focus
Brought attention and coordinating energy to rehabilitate wetlands degraded by gravel mining, advancing local planning and project prioritization for habitat restoration.
