DenCoKID builds community awareness of dyslexia, provides a web of support for families and educators of students with dyslexia, and advocates for improved, equitable learning outcomes for all Denver children.
About DENCOKID (Denver County Kids Identified With Dyslexia)
DenCoKID is a grassroots Denver-area nonprofit formed by families and educators to connect people with dyslexia to supports, to educate schools and the public about dyslexia, and to push for evidence-based screening and instruction in local schools.
The group operates community support meetings (virtual and in-person), offers educator resources and scholarships, runs book-donation efforts to increase dyslexia representation in school libraries, and leads awareness campaigns and empathy-building simulations for educators, policy makers, and the public.
Notable achievements
DPS universal dyslexia screening
Led local advocacy that contributed to Denver Public Schools adopting a universal dyslexia screening policy (effort advanced in 2023 with broad community petition support).
City recognition & awareness actions
Organized Dyslexia Awareness Month activities that included lighting the Denver City and County Building and securing a City Council proclamation recognizing dyslexia and its community impact.
New programs: book drives & scholarships
Launched a dyslexia book-donation program for Denver school libraries and an educator scholarship program to increase access to structured-literacy professional development.
