About RATIONAL MEDIA LTD
Rational Media Ltd (doing business as the Pueblo Star Journal) is organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit newsroom serving Pueblo County, Colorado. The organization produces a monthly print edition alongside continuously updated digital reporting, podcasts, and community forums to connect residents with local news and information.
Since relaunching in 2021–2022, the organization has focused on rebuilding trusted local coverage, expanding distribution to multiple pickup locations and mailings, and developing new media offerings (including podcasts and a planned video broadcast platform) to reach broader and younger audiences.
In the last 2–3 years the newsroom has increased community engagement through event partnerships, local reporting on elections and civic issues, training initiatives for mobile journalism, and editorial coverage that highlights underrepresented neighborhoods, seniors, and civic participation.
Notable achievements
Relaunch of Pueblo Star Journal
Revived the historic Star Journal legacy as a nonprofit local newspaper (print and digital), restoring a community-focused outlet for Pueblo after the closure of earlier local papers.
Expanded distribution and digital growth
Established monthly print distribution across multiple pickup locations and increased digital presence and newsletters, growing readership and community engagement since 2022.
Partnerships & programming expansion
Served as media partner on local cultural and memorial projects, ran community reporting series and podcasts, and launched donor-supported training campaigns (mobile-journalism bootcamps and matched fundraising drives) to sustain operations and outreach.
