About DESIGN BAY AREA

Design Bay Area is a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as a multidisciplinary design, arts and culture platform for the nine-county Bay Area. It produces city- and region-wide festivals, events, educational programming, and community platforms that elevate Bay Area design and create opportunities for practitioners, students, and creative businesses. Since acquiring San Francisco Design Week in 2021, Design Bay Area has expanded a network of regional festivals and programs (for example Design Healdsburg, Design Marin and others), launched digital tools and a studio directory, and continued public programming through 2024–2026 including the organization’s Year of Design initiatives and recurring festival activity.

Notable achievements

Acquisition of San Francisco Design Week (2021)

Design Bay Area acquired San Francisco Design Week from AIGA SF in 2021 and has since produced and grown the festival into a larger, multi-day public program that highlights Bay Area design talent and convenes industry, civic leaders, and the public.

Expanded regional festival network

Built a portfolio of regional design festivals and programs across the Bay Area (including Design Healdsburg, Design Marin and Design Silicon Valley), creating recurring public-facing events and opportunities for local studios and makers.

Digital platforms and membership programs

Launched a mobile app, a Studio Directory and membership offerings to increase visibility, facilitate connections among practitioners, and create donor and sponsor engagement channels.
