About SOLVING FOR SCIENCE

Solving For Science is a distributed, donor-facing 501(c)(3) community of scientists and allies headquartered in San Francisco that develops and supports projects aimed at making scientific practice, publishing, and training more open, equitable, and collaborative. The organization advances four strategic initiatives — ENGAGE (science communication and civic engagement training), CONNECT (community convenings to foster collaboration), PROPEL (scaling postbaccalaureate pathways into PhD programs), and CURATE (experiments in knowledge-sharing and open publishing). These initiatives are implemented through seed grants, pilots, workshops, and partnerships with universities and community programs. The EIN (87-4048733) and tax-exempt status have been confirmed against available nonprofit filings; in recent years (2023–2025) Solving For Science launched a Discovery Stack pilot to rethink scholarly publishing, expanded PROPEL-related partnerships, co-sponsored convenings with academic partners, and received multi-year grant support that materially expanded its programming and operations.

Notable achievements

Discovery Stack pilot

Designed in 2023 and piloted in 2024, the Discovery Stack is an experimental platform and workflow to remodel peer review and open-access publishing with the goal of improving speed, equity, and return of value to the scientific community.

PROPEL network expansion

Supported scaling and resource-sharing for postbaccalaureate PROPEL programs, helping sites and partners adopt paid research pathways to increase diversity and retention in the PhD pipeline.

Major grant support to scale programs

Secured multi-year grant funding in the 2023–2024 period that funded core staff, seed grants, pilots, and travel support for convenings, enabling program growth and broader community engagement.
