About IOLE
ʻIole is a place-based stewardship and research organization centered in the historic ʻIole ahupuaʻa in North Kohala, Hawaiʻi. The organization operates a living laboratory on roughly 2,400 acres that integrates Native Hawaiian cultural practices with applied science to advance local resilience in food, energy and natural resource systems.
Since being organized in 2021–2022, ʻIole has established governance, a leadership team and a board with academic and community leaders, launched on-site programming and hospitality/reservation operations, and developed partnerships with major institutions to scale research, education and community-facing projects. The organization has been an active recipient of philanthropic support and formalized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (IRS ruling in April 2022), filing federal Form 990 returns for recent fiscal years and reporting increasing program activity and revenues through 2022–2024.

2,400-acre land transfer and establishment
ʻIole took stewardship responsibility for an approximately 2,400-acre ahupuaʻa in North Kohala through a donation and stewardship arrangement that created the physical foundation for a large-scale living laboratory and place-based programs.
