OCEAN ALLIANCE PROJECT
Protecting and preserving the marine biodiversity of Hawai‘i’s local reefs through community-led ecological monitoring and regenerative tourism.
About OCEAN ALLIANCE PROJECT
Ocean Alliance Project (OAP) is a Hawaii-based nonprofit focused on coral reef conservation, ecological monitoring, and regenerative tourism on Oʻahu. The organization operates hands-on training programs, internships, and community science projects that combine photogrammetry, reef surveys, and sea-turtle monitoring to produce open-source reef health data. ([oceanallianceproject.org](https://oceanallianceproject.org/))
OAP was incorporated in Hawaii in January 2022 and pursued state grant funding to scale community monitoring (plans included certifying 50 community members and conducting 144 ecological surveys). The group publishes annual reports and maintains interactive data visualizations (including a coral disease dashboard and an ortho-mosaic database) used to guide local restoration and stakeholder engagement. Notable achievements
Incorporation and IRS recognition
Formed as a Hawaii nonprofit in January 2022 and recognized as a tax-exempt charitable organization (IRS ruling year reported as 2022), establishing OAP as a formal community-facing reef conservation entity. ([data.capitol.hawaii.gov](https://data.capitol.hawaii.gov/sessions/session2023/2023GIA-Apps/Ocean%20Alliance%20Project%20OP.pdf))
Development of open-source reef monitoring tools
Built and published publicly accessible coral-disease visualizations and an ortho-mosaic photogrammetry database to track reef health and support data-driven restoration on Oʻahu. ([oceanallianceproject.org](https://oceanallianceproject.org/coral-disease-in-hawaii-data/))
Community training and internship programs
Launched multi-day Conservation Diver/ecological monitoring courses, shorter reef-education experiences, and multi-week research internships designed to certify local volunteers and produce regular reef surveys and monitoring data. ([oceanallianceproject.org](https://oceanallianceproject.org/))
