About Care Through Touch Institute

Care Through Touch Institute (CTI) is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) that provides free, trauma-informed, clothed chair massage and related bodywork to people experiencing homelessness and other marginalized populations. CTI operates a volunteer-driven model that emphasizes consistent weekly presence in shelters, clinics, drop-in centers and pop-up care events to build trust and reduce barriers to care. Founded in 1983 and active in the Tenderloin and other neighborhoods, CTI trains volunteer massage practitioners in trauma-informed practice and partners with local service providers and events (including Pop-Up Care Villages and Project Homeless Connect) to reach clients where they already receive other supports. The organization reports regular service volume (50+ clients served weekly on average) and ongoing recruitment and training of volunteers to sustain and expand its outreach.

Notable achievements

40+ years of continuous service

Founded in 1983, CTI has delivered consistent, long-term hands-on care to San Francisco’s unhoused and marginalized communities for four decades, maintaining a presence through changing neighborhood conditions.

Consistent weekly outreach

CTI operates regular weekly clinics and outreach shifts — serving an average of 50+ clients per week — which emphasizes relationship-based care and continuity rather than one-off services.

Embedded community partnerships and event participation

CTI regularly partners with local organizations and citywide events (including Pop-Up Care Village–style events and Project Homeless Connect) to integrate trauma-informed massage into broader service offerings and reach clients in trusted settings.
