About HUI POHALA

Hui Pohala is a Honolulu-based coalition and 501(c)(3) organization working to expand access to high-quality palliative care across Hawaiʻi. It brings together health systems, academic partners, community organizations, and government agencies to develop workforce training, resources, and pilot programs that increase community- and home-based palliative care. Since 2024 Hui Pohala has led statewide initiatives to prepare providers and communities for a Medicaid-covered community-based palliative care benefit, launched training and resource programs for interdisciplinary teams, and coordinated outreach to patients, caregivers, and health professionals across the islands.

Notable achievements

State Med-QUEST Grant

Secured a $3.6 million grant from the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services, Med-QUEST Division (award announced in 2024) to fund multi-project efforts expanding home- and community-based palliative care across the state.

Medicaid Coverage Implementation Support

Played a leading role in statewide planning, provider preparation, and public outreach that supported the implementation of Hawaiʻi’s Medicaid community-based palliative care benefit (effective January 1, 2025), including webinars and training for clinicians and managed care plans.

Workforce & Training Initiatives

Funded and organized interdisciplinary training and workforce development projects (including ESPEC Hawaiʻi scholarship support and online training series) to increase the number of clinicians, social workers, and allied health professionals skilled in palliative care.
