About Justice for the People Legal Center

Justice for the People (JFP) combines high-impact impact litigation with grassroots organizing to defend rent-burdened and historically marginalized communities, with a particular focus on tenant protections and mobile/manufactured-home communities.

Since its founding out of long-term housing organizing work, JFP has built litigation programs intended to shift industry practices (through class actions and enforcement) while investing in resident-led campaigns for community ownership and tenant power.

In the last 2–3 years JFP has expanded class-action work against large corporate landlords and related actors, pursued litigation and enforcement to restore money and records to tenants, and supported several mobile-home park resident ownership efforts.

Notable achievements

Large-scale class-action program

Established and expanded a program of coordinated class actions (over a dozen active class suits) targeting corporate landlords and related actors; these cases collectively encompass tens of thousands of rental units across the state and aim to return money to renters and change industry practices.

Practice-changing settlements

Achieved settlements and resolutions that changed practices of eviction-related actors (for example, litigation that led an eviction firm to stop using certain fee-demand language), producing monetary relief and processes to clear tenants’ housing and credit records.

Advancing community ownership

Played a legal and organizing role in community ownership efforts for mobile-home parks, contributing to the successful sale/closing on community-owned parks in the Denver area and strengthening resident opportunity-to-purchase outcomes.
