HAWAII FOREST INSTITUTE
The Hawaiʻi Forest Institute promotes the health and productivity of Hawaiʻi’s forests through forest restoration, educational programs, information dissemination, and support for scientific research.
About HAWAII FOREST INSTITUTE
The Hawaiʻi Forest Institute (HFI) is a donor-facing 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in 2003 by the Hawaiʻi Forest Industry Association to advance forest restoration, education, and research across the Hawaiian Islands. HFI implements demonstration and restoration projects, publishes educational materials, and partners with zoos, bird conservation centers, schools, and community groups to deliver hands-on stewardship and learning opportunities.
In recent years HFI has expanded its MAHALO ʻĀINA: Give Back to the Forest fundraising initiative, completed a 5-year strategic plan (2024–2028), and continued operating multiple Discovery Forest demonstration sites and statewide outreach programs that engage volunteers, students, and community partners in native-plant propagation, outplanting, and site management.
Notable achievements
Seedling Propagation & Outplanting
Across 2023–2024 HFI and partners propagated and/or outplanted roughly 1,400+ seedlings each year (1,479 in 2023; 1,412 in 2024), supporting multiple island restoration and demonstration sites.
Habitat Management (Acres Added)
HFI stewarded more than 100 acres of forest habitat and brought additional acreage under intensive management (reported totals: ~118 acres managed with 4.2 acres newly intensified in 2023; ~117 acres managed with 3.2 new acres in 2024).
Strategic Planning & Community Fundraising
HFI completed a 5-Year Strategic Plan (2024–2028) and grew the MAHALO ʻĀINA fundraising initiative, raising community contributions to support propagation, outplanting, site maintenance and education (funds reported in recent annual reports).
