About BE A CHAMPION INC
Be A Champion, Inc. is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2001 that delivers after-school, summer, sports and enrichment programs for K–12 youth. The organization was started by former University of Houston athletes and focuses on combining athletics, academic support, and nutrition to reach under-resourced children. Be A Champion operates programs across multiple Texas regions (including Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio and other areas), partners with schools and community centers, and runs the Champion Fuel nutrition initiative to provide meals and snacks to students in enrichment programs. In recent years the organization has continued to scale site-based programming and meal services, reporting operation of hundreds of program sites and hundreds of staff to support daily programming across the state.
Notable achievements
State-level child nutrition contract
Secured a contract with the Texas Department of Agriculture to operate child nutrition programs (CACFP and Summer Food Service Program), enabling the organization to deliver meals and snacks to students in enrichment settings across Texas.
Multi-site program expansion
Expanded operations from a single summer camp into a network of after-school, summer and enrichment programs across major Texas regions, reaching thousands of children daily and employing hundreds of program staff.
Early federal grant support
Received a National Youth Sports Program grant early in its history to support summer sports and youth programming, helping establish program model and community partnerships.
