About NIA Centre
NIA Centre is an African American cultural center in Grand Rapids, Michigan that builds community through Cultural Arts, Entrepreneurship & Wealth Building, and Health Awareness. The organization programs exhibitions, performances, youth engagement, business-support initiatives, and public events designed to celebrate Black excellence and expand access to the arts.
NIA Centre is an established 501(c)(3) organization (EIN 90-0684906) that actively partners with local funders and institutions to deliver programming and resources to underserved populations in Kent County. In recent years the organization has increased its operating capacity, maintained an active event calendar (including participation as an ArtPrize venue), and secured both foundation and public grant support to expand services and community engagement.
Notable achievements
Opened downtown community engagement space
Established a temporary community engagement location in downtown Grand Rapids to host exhibitions, programs, and space rentals that serve residents of the 3rd Ward and Heartside neighborhoods and expand public access to cultural programming.
Secured foundation and public grants (2023–2024)
Received grant support from the Rehmann Foundation (2023) and a Michigan Arts & Culture Council grant (FY2024) to strengthen arts programming, entrepreneurship training, and community initiatives.
Financial growth and strengthened reserves (2023)
Reported a significant increase in reported revenue and net assets in 2023, with annual revenue rising to approximately $265,000 and net assets reflecting corresponding growth, enabling expanded programming and organizational capacity.
