About SAN FRANCISCO WOMENS CANCER NETWORK

The San Francisco Women’s Cancer Network (SFWCN) is a coalition of health care professionals, community advocates, and member organizations founded in 1987 to protect and sustain safety-net cancer services for low-income, uninsured or underinsured women in San Francisco. SFWCN operates as a convening and capacity-building network: it funds and supports culturally competent patient navigation, language-specific support groups, technical assistance for community partners, and advocacy for equitable access to screening, treatment, and survivorship services. In the last 2–3 years SFWCN helped sustain hybrid (virtual/in-person) support group programming during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, funded culturally specific navigator positions (including support for a navigator at Rafiki Coalition for Health & Wellness), and launched the San Francisco Women’s Cancer Alliance to expand advocacy and resource-building for underserved women with cancer.

Notable achievements

Sustained community network since 1987

Maintained continuous coalition operations for decades, coordinating safety‑net providers, community groups, hospitals and academic partners to preserve cancer services for underserved women in San Francisco.

Funded culturally specific patient navigation

Provided grants/subcontracts to support at least two patient navigators focused on African American and Asian communities and funded a cancer navigator position at the Rafiki Coalition, improving access and care coordination for underinsured women.

Kept support services active through the pandemic

Helped member support groups transition from phone outreach to Zoom and hybrid models, enabling continued psychosocial support (including language-specific groups) and community-driven projects such as a Chinese support-group cookbook that grew from those activities.
