About Gluten Intolerance Group of North America

Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) is a U.S.-based registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1974 that supports people with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and related disorders. GIG operates peer support networks, educational resources, and industry-facing certification and validation programs to improve safety and access to truly gluten-free foods.

GIG’s signature programs include the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO), which independently certifies consumer products to a strict gluten threshold, and the Gluten-Free Food Service (GFFS) validation program for foodservice operations. In the last 2–3 years GIG has continued expanding its consumer resources (including Generation GF materials), the GFFS validated network, and maintained active certification oversight through GFCO.

Notable achievements

Established, tax‑exempt nonprofit

GFCO scale and standards

The Gluten-Free Certification Organization has independently certified tens of thousands of products worldwide to a strict gluten threshold and maintains a program of routine testing, audits, and third-party conformity standards to protect consumers.

Active certification enforcement (2024)

In recent years GFCO has actively monitored product safety and taken corrective action when necessary, including withdrawal of certification from manufacturers that fail to meet remediation or testing requirements to protect the gluten-free public.
