About Waiʻanae Hawaiian Civic Club

The Waiʻanae Hawaiian Civic Club (WHCC) is a community-based nonprofit founded on June 15, 1935, dedicated to preserving Native Hawaiian culture and supporting educational opportunities for Native Hawaiian students. WHCC is a chartered member of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs (chartered April 6, 1966) and operates as a 501(c)(3) organization. WHCC runs place-based cultural programs and community events along the Waiʻanae Coast, including stewardship of the Kūʻīllioloa Heiau and the voyaging canoe E Ala, which are used for hands-on cultural education. In recent years the club has presented public workshops and youth programming (for example the Kaiāulu Creators 3-day workshop in January 2024) and celebrated its 90th anniversary with a community event on March 22, 2025. WHCC maintains regular nonprofit reporting and has filed Form 990/990‑EZ returns through 2024, showing continued community-contributed funding and positive net assets that support ongoing cultural and educational activities.

Notable achievements

90th Anniversary (2025)

Hosted a community celebration on March 22, 2025 marking 90 years of civic and cultural service to the Waiʻanae community.

Voyaging Canoe Stewardship (E Ala)

Stewards a voyaging canoe (E Ala) used as an educational seafaring vehicle to teach wayfinding, moʻolelo, and place-based cultural practices to keiki and youth.

Kaiāulu Creators Workshop (Jan 2024)

Produced a 3-day community workshop (January 13–15, 2024) that combined digital art-making with local moʻolelo, engaging keiki through kupuna in cultural storytelling and creative skills.
