About LAHUI O KOOLAULOA CANOE CLUB

Lāhui ʻo Koʻolauloa is a community-based outrigger canoe club based in Kahana Bay, Hauʻula, Oʻahu. The club was formed to revive and perpetuate Hawaiian outrigger paddling and related cultural practices in the moku of Koʻolauloa after a multi-decade absence of an active club in the bay.

The organization operates year-round programs for keiki, youth (Nā ʻOpio), adult recreational paddlers and competitive Hui Waʻa racers, and emphasizes cultural practice (pule, oli, and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi) alongside athletic training. Lāhui ʻo Koʻolauloa fields crews in local regattas and supports community access to paddling for a broad age range from keiki to kupuna.

Since its founding the club has moved from grassroots beginnings into an established, donor-facing nonprofit with public registration/registration-based participation and active community engagement through training, regattas, and youth development programs.

Notable achievements

Revival of paddling in Kahana Bay

Reestablished an active canoe club in Kahana Bay (origins cited to 2014), bringing organized outrigger paddling and cultural practice back to the region after a decades-long absence.

Rapid membership growth

Grew from a small competitive launch (fewer than 50 paddlers when competition began in 2017) to a large, active membership (reported at roughly 160–170 paddlers) supporting youth and adult programs.

Competitive and youth program success

Developed Nā ʻOpio (youth) and Hui Waʻa (competitive) programs that have produced race wins and strong finishes in Windward regattas and qualified crews for statewide championship events.
