TRANSGENDER DISTRICT COMPANY
To create an urban environment that fosters the rich history, culture, legacy, and empowerment of transgender people and its deep roots in the southeastern Tenderloin neighborhood.
About TRANSGENDER DISTRICT COMPANY
The Transgender District Company (commonly known as The Transgender District) is a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit and the world’s first legally recognized transgender cultural district, founded in 2017 by Black trans women leaders to preserve history, advance cultural programming, and stabilize the local transgender community. The organization runs community-facing programs in tenant protections, economic and workforce development (including an Entrepreneurship Accelerator), arts and cultural preservation, legal name/gender marker assistance, and direct economic supports, and it operates as an intermediary with City agencies to protect district land use and heritage. In recent years (financial year ending 2023 and onward) the organization reported roughly $2.0M in revenue and maintained active program delivery, while also facing municipal grant rescissions and funding shortfalls in 2024–2025 that prompted program scaling and the establishment of an emergency “Riot Fund” to sustain services and community supports.
Notable achievements
First legally recognized transgender cultural district
Secured formal recognition by the City of San Francisco in 2017 as the world’s first legally recognized transgender district, establishing a dedicated geographic and cultural platform for trans history and community-led placemaking in the Tenderloin.
Entrepreneurship Accelerator impact
Designed and ran an Entrepreneurship Accelerator for transgender and queer people of color that has trained and supported community entrepreneurs (the program reports having graduated nearly 50 participants), providing business training, seed support and partnership-based technical assistance.
Guaranteed income pilot participation
Partnered with local health and city programs to deliver a targeted guaranteed-income pilot prioritizing highly vulnerable transgender residents (program enrollment included 55 recipients receiving monthly cash support), demonstrating a direct economic-stability intervention for marginalized community members.
