The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison builds and supports the field-wide infrastructure to advance access and excellence in higher education in prison and through reentry.
About ALLIANCE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION IN PRISON
The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison is a national backbone organization that supports and connects practitioners, currently and formerly incarcerated students, researchers, and higher education institutions to expand access to high-quality, free higher education inside prisons and through reentry. Founded through a multi-year strategic planning process that began in 2015, the Alliance convenes the field through the National Conference on Higher Education in Prison (NCHEP), the Incarcerated Scholars Conference, a national directory and annual survey of programs, and by publishing resources and guidance that center equity and lived experience. The organization became an independent 501(c)(3) on May 1, 2024 and continues to operate as a donor-facing nonprofit active in convening, research coordination, resource development, and field advocacy to improve program quality and student outcomes.
