About DENVER BASIC INCOME PROJECT

The Denver Basic Income Project (DBIP) is a Denver-based 501(c)(3) that runs a randomized controlled trial providing monthly unconditional cash payments to people experiencing homelessness and families using the shelter system. DBIP partners with academic researchers (University of Denver Center for Housing and Homelessness Research) to evaluate outcomes and produce publicly available reports. Since launching, DBIP has deployed millions in direct cash assistance and published year-one findings showing substantial improvements in housing stability, reductions in public-service use, and measurable public-cost offsets. The organization has received philanthropic and municipal support and extensive media coverage as a model for guaranteed-income approaches to homelessness.

Notable achievements

Large-scale cash deployment

Deployed over $10.8 million in unconditional cash to more than 800 unhoused Denver residents across multi-cohort payment groups.

Year-one RCT outcomes

Independent year-one research found approximately 45% of participants were residing in their own house or apartment at the 10-month mark and documented significant reductions in emergency service use, with estimated public-service savings of about $589,214.

Secured public and philanthropic support

Secured municipal ARPA funding and philanthropic grants to continue and expand the pilot and established a formal research partnership with the University of Denver to evaluate program impacts.
