COLORADO WHOLE BLOOD COALITION
To establish and maintain a collaborative structure that will facilitate and allow for the implementation of safe, effective, and interconnected whole blood programs throughout the state of Colorado.
About COLORADO WHOLE BLOOD COALITION
The Colorado Whole Blood Coalition (CWBC) is a statewide collaborative of emergency medical services, trauma leaders, blood banks, hospitals, and regional emergency medical/trauma advisory councils (RETACs) formed to coordinate prehospital whole blood programs across Colorado.
CWBC develops governance structures, protocols, education materials and implementation support so local EMS agencies and hospitals can safely carry and transfuse whole blood in the field; the coalition also maintains a library of resources, program templates and tools to help new programs launch and scale.
Notable achievements
Formation of a statewide coalition
Established a multi-stakeholder governance model (RETAC representatives plus advisory council) to coordinate whole blood program development across Colorado.
Development of program resources
Produced and published a resource library of clinical templates, EMS and medical director FAQs, SOP examples and QA/data-collection tools to accelerate safe local program launches.
Participation in funded program initiatives (2024–2025)
Actively supported and was listed as a partner in grant-funded and pilot prehospital whole blood rollouts across Colorado in 2024–2025, including programs enabling EMS supervisors and selected ambulances to carry and transfuse whole blood.
