About PHYSICIANS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INC

San Francisco Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility (SF Bay PSR), founded in 1979, is the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility National. The chapter is a physician- and health-professional-led nonprofit that uses education, advocacy, and community partnerships to address existential harms to health including nuclear weapons, climate change, environmental toxic exposures, and social and racial injustice.

SF Bay PSR runs sustained advocacy, community-engagement, and education programs across the Bay Area. It mobilizes a network of health professionals (3,500+ subscribers/supporters), publishes annual accomplishments and financial information, staffs committees and internship programs, and partners with environmental-justice groups and funders to advance policy wins and community projects (recent work includes building electrification advocacy, air-quality and port-pollution campaigns, and the Richmond Healthy Environment Project).

Notable achievements

Mobilized health professionals for policy advocacy

In recent years the chapter organized hundreds of health professionals for testimony, meetings with policymakers, and coordinated letters on public-health policy; its 2024 work included dozens of action alerts and more than a hundred sign-on letters supporting air-quality, electrification, and environmental-justice measures.

Secured grant-supported community projects

SF Bay PSR obtained grant funding (including support from Resources Legacy Fund) to launch and support community-focused projects such as the Richmond Healthy Environment Project, partnering with local groups to reduce pollution exposures and advance community health protections.

Transparency and sustained reporting

The chapter publishes annual 'Accomplishments' reports and posts Form 990 filings publicly on its website, documenting program activities, financials, and internship/early-career training programs that support its advocacy and education work.
