About KULINTANG ARTS INC

Founded in 1985 and commonly known as KULARTS, Kulintang Arts Inc. is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) arts organization that presents contemporary and tribal Pilipino arts. The organization produces commissions, performances, exhibitions, educational programs and community-engaged projects that center Pilipino American creative expression and cultural continuity.

KULARTS runs artist development and youth programs (including AGOS youth programming and resident ensembles), curates community festivals and tours, and preserves traditional practices such as kulintang music through research, documentation and intergenerational teaching. In the last few years the organization has expanded its civic presence in San Francisco’s SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District through public grants and a joint acquisition of a permanent performance facility with a partnering Filipino cultural organization (acquisition activity completed in 2024).

Permanent performance facility secured (2024)

In 2024 KULARTS partnered with a local Filipino cultural organization to secure long-term space in SOMA Pilipinas, enabled by a major municipal acquisition grant, establishing a permanent Filipino-forward multidisciplinary performance venue in San Francisco.

State arts funding

KULARTS received competitive operating support from the California Arts Council and other public funders (including a multi-year general operating grant in 2023), strengthening program capacity and public presentation of Pilipino arts.

Sustained artistic leadership and national profile

Over four decades the organization has commissioned, toured and presented works nationally and internationally; its artistic leadership has received peer recognition (including fellowships and civic arts awards) for contributions to Filipino and Asian American performing arts.
