THE 1990 INSTITUTE

The 1990 Institute is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that develops educational programs, multimedia resources, and teacher training to broaden public understanding of China and the Asian American experience. The organization operates an extensive Reference Library and a recurring Teachers Workshop series designed for middle and high school educators and the general public.

In the last 2–3 years the Institute has expanded its digital resources and programming, producing short-form videos and webinars (including the "Beyond the Tiles" video released July 13, 2023 and the ChatAAPI pilot in June 2023), running annual teacher workshops with downloadable lesson plans, and launching youth-facing events such as its College Essay Contest and a Sept. 6 youth symposium. The organization continues to publish an annual report (most recently a 2023 review) and issues public statements on policy matters relevant to U.S.–China educational exchange and student visas.
