About BAYVIEW OPERA HOUSE INC

Bayview Opera House Inc. (operating as the Ruth Williams / Bayview Opera House) is a San Francisco 501(c)(3) arts organization that programs and manages the historic Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre. The organization runs arts-education classes, artist residencies, festivals and community events that center Black arts and cultural expression in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood.

The Opera House is a city cultural center and steward of an 1888 landmark building, offering low- or no-cost programming, fiscal sponsorship for local artists and collectives, and public events that bring together neighborhood residents and Bay Area audiences. In recent years the organization has expanded its digital offerings (podcast and online media), continued community festivals and concert series, and sustained artist-development programs such as Artist in Residence, Tools of the Trade, SF Sounds and the D10 Black Arts Grant.

Historic preservation and renovation

Stewardship and phased renovation of the 1888 theater preserved original architectural features and modernized the facility, allowing the venue to continue serving as a local cultural hub.
