CHILDREN OF SHELTERS

Children of Shelters is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) that delivers education, enrichment and nutrition services to children living in or supported by family transitional shelters. The organization targets developmental, academic and social needs through programs such as in-shelter tutoring, speech and language services, summer camp support, garden-to-table nutrition classes, music and art therapy, and celebration programs. Founded in 1995, Children of Shelters operates with an actively engaged volunteer board that covers 100% of the organization’s operational costs so donor dollars go directly to programs. The organization reports a multi-year record of delivering direct services and events (including annual SantaFest holiday dinners, the Birthday Bunch program and summer camp placements) and publishes annual impact metrics showing over 1,000 children reached and dozens of specialized service enrollments each year. In recent fiscal filings (fiscal years ending 2023 and 2024) the charity reported operating revenues in the low-to-mid six-figure range and maintained positive net assets while continuing core program delivery, including a Graduate & Family Support track that enrolls hundreds of students and shelter-based specialized therapy and nutrition programming serving many dozens of children annually.
