Children’s Book Project

Children’s Book Project is a San Francisco–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit (federal tax ID 94-3229734, tax-exempt since 1995) that collects new and like-new children’s books and places them in the hands of children and the educators and service providers who serve them. Its core operation is a Book Bank in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood that serves partner teachers, caseworkers, and community organizations by allowing them to select unlimited free books for the children they work with. The organization runs several literacy programs—including Book Bank, Read Aloud, Second Reading, Storytime, and a Teen Ambassador program—and relies on volunteers and book drives to process donated materials. As of early 2026 the organization reports processing tens of thousands of donated books annually and continuing to expand distribution across San Francisco and surrounding counties. Children’s Book Project emphasizes measurable impact: it reports having given away more than 3.47 million books since its founding in 1992 and publishes annual reports and Form 990s on its website to document recent program and financial activity.
