GRABHORN INSTITUTE

The Grabhorn Institute is a San Francisco-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2000 to preserve two historic bookmaking enterprises: M&H Type (the nation’s oldest type foundry) and Arion Press (a leading fine-press letterpress publisher). The organization operates and interprets one of the last fully integrated hand-bookmaking facilities in the United States, including a large historic collection of metal typefaces, a working foundry, letterpress workshop, and bindery. The EIN 94-3363125 has been verified against public nonprofit filings and the organization’s own donor materials. In the past 2–3 years the Institute has continued public programming and exhibitions, sustained its paid apprenticeship programs, and completed a public-facing relocation and gallery program transition (notably opening its renewed public facility program in fall 2024). Recent Form 990 filings for fiscal year 2023 show materially increased revenues and assets consistent with expanded program activity, and the organization continues to publish limited-edition artist books, host exhibitions, and present artist/author talks that extend its educational reach.
