About SOCIETY FOR ASIAN ART
The Society for Asian Art is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1958 to support Asian art and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. It was formed to help secure Avery Brundage’s collection for the city and has since operated as a membership-based organization that produces public programs, study groups, travel, and scholarly lectures. The Society organizes more than 100 lectures and member events each year, including the long-running Arts of Asia Lecture Series that serves as core material for the museum’s docent-training curriculum. In recent years the organization has shown financial stability and continued program activity (fiscal year ending June 2024 showed revenues and net assets sufficient to sustain programming), while maintaining an ongoing philanthropic relationship with the Asian Art Museum.
