About HAWAII AGRICULTURE RESEARCH CENTER

Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) is a long-standing nonprofit applied research organization headquartered in the Kunia/Waipahu area of Oʻahu. Originating from the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association experiment station, HARC now conducts diversified tropical crop and forestry research, operates research farms and a laboratory, and stewards an extensive archival library of plantation-era research.

HARC’s work spans five core research divisions (agronomy & ecosystem services, crop improvement & breeding, sustainable forestry, agrivoltaics and select crop programs such as coffee and cacao). In recent years HARC has continued active outreach and workforce-development programming — for example the Seeds4Tomorrow K–12 education program and a Sustainability Fellowship in partnership with the University of Hawaiʻi — alongside applied projects such as coffee rust resistance breeding, koa reforestation efforts, and an agrivoltaic pilot to evaluate dual land use for food and solar generation.

Notable achievements

Century-plus research legacy

HARC traces its institutional roots to the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association experiment station (established in the early 1900s) and maintains stewardship of a significant archival collection while operating modern research farms and laboratories.

Crop improvement and disease resistance

HARC developed and advanced coffee breeding and rust-resistance work and has provided improved coffee material and technical support to growers across multiple Hawaiian islands to strengthen farm resilience.

Education & workforce development

Through its Seeds4Tomorrow K–12 program and the Sustainability Fellowship (in partnership with the University of Hawaiʻi), HARC has delivered hands-on agricultural education and graduate research support, reaching thousands of community members and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in recent years.
