About HAWAII ALLIANCE OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

The Hawaiʻi Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations (HANO) is Hawaiʻi’s statewide membership and capacity-building organization for community-based nonprofits. HANO provides training, consulting, convenings, advocacy, and tools that help nonprofit leaders and boards improve governance, financial management, and program delivery. HANO operates signature programs including HANOCON (an annual statewide nonprofit conference), the HANO Fellows leadership cohort, a Nonprofit Board Leadership Institute, and sector research and advocacy. In recent years HANO has expanded statewide outreach and published a multi-island State of the Sector report to inform funders, policymakers, and the public about nonprofit capacity and needs.

Notable achievements

The View From Here — State of the Sector report (2026)

Released a comprehensive statewide report in 2026 that synthesizes survey data, financial trends and leader interviews to profile Hawaiʻi’s nonprofit sector, highlight workforce and funding strains, and recommend policy and funding reforms to strengthen nonprofits as essential community infrastructure.

HANOCON: statewide conference (resumed/expanded)

Re-established and delivered HANOCON as Hawaiʻi’s largest in‑person gathering of nonprofit professionals (recent editions in 2024 and continuing thereafter), providing sector-wide professional development, peer networking, and recognition of emerging leaders.

HANO Fellows leadership program (cohort growth)

Operates a multi-month HANO Fellows cohort program to develop nonprofit executives; in recent years the program has grown (including a funded 2024 cohort) and has supported successive cohorts of emerging executive directors with leadership training, peer networks, and coaching.
