Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is the state’s oldest and largest nonprofit public-interest law firm, operating statewide with offices and programs across the islands. It provides no-fee civil legal services in areas including family law, housing, consumer protection, public benefits, immigration, elder law, and child welfare. In recent years the organization has handled thousands of client matters: in 2022 it reported receiving over 15,000 requests for assistance and providing legal help in roughly 7,200 cases. In 2024 Legal Aid reported that more than 2,000 clients it served were homeless or at risk of homelessness, over 1,600 clients identified as Native Hawaiian, over 1,200 clients had experienced domestic violence, and about 700 clients spoke a primary language other than English. The organization has also led disaster legal-response efforts (including post‑wildfire clinics and hotlines) and expanded online resources such as LegalNavigatorHawaii.org to increase access to justice across the islands.
