THE OUTDOOR CIRCLE
To preserve, protect, and enhance the scenic environment of Hawai‘i for future generations by advocating for the planting and protection of trees, for placing utility lines underground, and by promoting recycling and fighting for a billboard-free Hawai‘i.
About THE OUTDOOR CIRCLE
The Outdoor Circle is a long-established, donor-facing environmental nonprofit based in Honolulu that works statewide to protect and enhance Hawai‘i’s scenic environment through tree planting and care, anti-billboard advocacy, public education, and local branch-led projects. The organization traces its origins to 1912, operates a network of island branches, and is active in mapping and protecting exceptional trees, collaborating with government and community partners on urban-forest and scenic-protection efforts. In recent years The Outdoor Circle has remained active on statewide issues (including advocacy around trees affected by the Honolulu rail project), has publicly committed resources to post-wildfire replanting and recovery work on Maui, and continues to publish annual reports and program updates documenting its work and finances.
Notable achievements
More than a century of impact
Founded in the early 20th century (origins 1912), The Outdoor Circle has sustained island-wide programs for over 100 years focused on planting and protecting trees, preserving view planes, and preventing visual blight across Hawai‘i.
Established community tree nursery
Created the first plant nursery at Kapi‘olani Park in 1918 and transferred it to the City of Honolulu in 1946; that nursery has continued to serve as a repository/source for municipal street trees.
Recent advocacy and recovery work (2023–2025)
In the last 2–3 years the organization has been publicly active on high-profile local issues (including advocacy related to trees lost or at risk from the Honolulu rail alignment), announced plans for post‑wildfire replanting support on Maui, and hosted a grant‑project presentation for its archival collection in December 2024.
