HONOLULU CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES
To present world-class chamber music to Oʻahu audiences and to provide outreach and educational programs that introduce students and new audiences to the repertoire, performance practice, and enjoyment of chamber music.
About HONOLULU CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES
Founded from local house-concert activities in 1955 and organized as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization since the 1960s, the Honolulu Chamber Music Series (HCMS) presents international and American chamber ensembles on Oʻahu. The series has a long history of bringing renowned ensembles and soloists to the Mae Z. Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and continues to curate seasons that blend established chamber repertoire with varied stylistic programming.
HCMS runs an annual concert season (most recently the 2025–26 season) and pairs concerts with artist talks, masterclasses, and school performances to expand audience development and music education. The organization is volunteer-board governed, maintains current public IRS Form 990 filings, and remains active in planning future seasons and outreach activities.
Notable achievements
Longstanding season since 1955
Established from house concerts in the 1950s, HCMS has sustained continuous programming for more than six decades, making it one of Hawaii’s longest-running classical music presenters.
Hosted world-class ensembles
Across its history the series has presented many internationally renowned ensembles (including Juilliard, Tokyo, Emerson, Takács, and Miró Quartets) and recent seasons have featured artists such as the Miró Quartet, Parker Quartet, and pianist Jeremy Denk.
Active education and outreach
HCMS regularly organizes artist-led masterclasses and student performances, bringing visiting ensembles into schools and the university to broaden access to chamber music.
