HAWAII YOUTH OPERA CHORUS
The mission of HYOC is to build a core nurturing and firm cultural and musical foundation for our youth in their individual and collective lifelong pursuit of excellence in choral music and other performing arts, fostering leadership in the performing arts for future generations.
About HAWAII YOUTH OPERA CHORUS
Founded in 1961, the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus (HYOC) is Oʻahu’s longest-running community youth choir, offering graded choral ensembles, music education, and performance training for students in grades K–12. HYOC serves approximately 1,200–1,500 students annually through its Saturday program, school outreach, choral festivals, and youth opera productions, producing roughly 20–30 concerts per year (many free to the public) and performing in community venues and eldercare settings. Under Artistic Director Nola Nahulu (director since 1986), HYOC emphasizes Hawaiian culture and world music and actively commissions new youth operas — including the organization’s 10th youth-opera commission presented as part of its OPERAtunities program in 2025.
