About ADULT FRIENDS FOR YOUTH

Adult Friends for Youth (AFY) is a Honolulu-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has worked with high-risk youth across Oʻahu since 1986. AFY uses its signature Redirectional Therapy and a set of community-centered programs to prevent youth violence, reduce truancy, and reconnect students to education and community supports. AFY operates school-centered and neighborhood counseling groups, a Mobile Education Center and Mobile Assessment Center, and the annual PEARL (Promoting Peace, Empathy, Acceptance, Respect, Love) student conventions. The organization partners with schools, law enforcement, and community funders to provide wraparound services and diversion alternatives aimed at helping youth graduate and enter positive pathways.

Notable achievements

PEARL Conventions

Runs annual PEARL student anti-bullying and violence conventions that reach thousands of elementary and middle school students (about 4,000 participants in a typical year), focused on social-emotional learning and bystander intervention.

Neighborhood Program Outcomes

Neighborhood outreach and Redirectional Therapy have been applied to dozens of youth gangs and friendship groups; AFY reports having provided services to 68 gangs with a substantial number (33) later dissolved or redirected toward constructive community participation.

Mobile Education & Diversion Services

Operates a Mobile Education Center to reconnect truant youth to education (providing laptops, Wi‑Fi and in‑community tutoring/support) and a Mobile Assessment Center that partners with Honolulu Police Department as a citation-based diversion alternative to juvenile justice.
