About PACIFIC HEALTH RESEARCH AND EDUCATION INSTITUTE

The Pacific Health Research and Education Institute (PHREI) is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research organization based in Honolulu, Hawaii that conducts collaborative, multi‑institutional research on PTSD, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, diabetes, aging, telehealth, and health care delivery. PHREI is an affiliate of the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System and serves as a clinical/research partner for veteran‑focused studies while also working with academic and federal research partners across the U.S. The organization emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and applied clinical research to improve veteran and public health outcomes. PHREI traces its research lineage to organizations active in Hawaii since 1960 (as the successor‑in‑interest to Pacific Health Research Institute/SMRI) and maintains an active portfolio of federally funded studies; recent activity in the last 2–3 years includes NIH R01 funding for dementia/cognitive‑aging research, ongoing PTSD and telehealth trials, and publicly filed Form 990s showing program and fundraising activity through 2024.

Awarded R01AG067621 (active funding actions in 2023–2024) to support multivariate research into factors linked to changing dementia trends and cognitive aging; the award provided substantial federal research support in the 2023–2024 period.

Longstanding regional research legacy

Successor‑in‑interest to the Pacific Health Research Institute/SMRI with research activity in Hawaii dating back to 1960, including large NCI and population cohort studies that shaped clinical screening and epidemiologic understanding.

Sustained federal grant portfolio

Served as recipient or site for multiple competitive federal awards (including UF1, RF1 and U10 program funding across neurodegenerative and clinical trial projects), demonstrating capacity to manage multi‑year, multi‑investigator studies.
