About HARMONY PROJECT BAY AREA INC

Harmony Project Bay Area (HPBA) is a research-informed, tuition-free after-school music education program based in San Francisco that serves students in Daly City and East Oakland. The organization delivers multi-year ensemble instruction (strings, chamber, orchestra, mariachi, guitar, composition and improvisation), mentorship, and performance opportunities designed to support academic success and social-emotional development.

HPBA focuses on students from low-income, under-resourced communities by partnering with Title I schools, public libraries, and community centers to provide at least several hours of weekly instruction and year-to-year continuity. In recent years the organization transitioned from operating under a fiscal sponsor to becoming a self-governing nonprofit (effective January 1, 2025) and continues to expand programming, partnerships, and community performances across the Bay Area.

Notable achievements

Measured academic gains

A program evaluation comparing HPBA students to a matched control group found that after four years HPBA students outperformed peers by approximately 13% in math and 20% in reading on California standardized tests, demonstrating measurable academic impact tied to the multi-year music curriculum.

Site expansion and sustained reach

HPBA established sustained programming in Daly City and an East Oakland satellite, offering multi-day weekly instruction and serving students from more than 20 East Oakland schools and multiple Daly City elementary sites, with annual public performances that engage families and community audiences.

Organizational independence

Following a period under a fiscal sponsor, Harmony Project Bay Area became a self-governing nonprofit effective January 1, 2025, solidifying governance, launching its own board, and positioning the organization for direct fundraising and local partnerships.
