About Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association

Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association (HBDA) is a long-established 501(c)(3) nonprofit ballroom dance organization founded in 1959 that operates chapters across Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. HBDA’s program model emphasizes accessible, community-focused American Social ballroom instruction (multi-week quarterly classes) and regular social dances that serve adults of varying skill levels. In recent years HBDA has resumed and expanded in-person classes and social events following pandemic disruptions, maintaining multiple active chapters and an aggregate membership of roughly 300 participants. HBDA continues to file annual Form 990 returns (most recently for fiscal year ending March 2024) and operates as a small, donor-facing arts/education nonprofit providing affordable dance instruction and community events. Leadership and teaching are provided by volunteer and semi-volunteer instructors and an elected HBDA Council; the organization offers regular weekend social dances in Aiea and seasonal balls and chapter anniversary events that draw members statewide.
