The campaign will unlock a healthier, more resilient South Platte River corridor by pairing targeted, science-based restoration with community education that protects gains over time. This moment matters because habitat degradation, invasive species, and erosion are intensifying—driven in part by rising temperatures and more frequent high-intensity storm events—making future restoration more costly and less effective if action is delayed.

The South Platte River Restoration Initiative will deliver on-the-ground restoration of degraded riverbank sections through invasive species removal, reintroduction of native vegetation, and erosion control measures designed to stabilize the corridor and support biodiversity and wildlife recovery. Erosion management is intended to contribute to improved downstream water quality.

The campaign will also cultivate long-term stewardship through scheduled restoration events and public awareness efforts, supported by dedicated project management for coordination, execution, and reporting. Progress will be tracked through restoration milestones (including miles of riverbank restored), documented habitat improvements, vegetation and erosion results, and community engagement metrics; where feasible, sediment load trends will be monitored. The Greenway Foundation is seeking a $100,000 leadership gift, with consistent progress reporting and periodic updates for partners.

The South Platte River ecosystem is under increasing pressure from habitat degradation, invasive species, and erosion—trends that threaten biodiversity, water quality, and the long-term health of the watershed. Riparian corridors like the South Platte are among the most biologically productive ecosystems in the region, yet also among the most vulnerable to land-use change, altered hydrology, and climate-driven stress.

In Colorado, rising temperatures and more frequent high-intensity storm events are accelerating erosion and weakening native plant communities. If degradation goes unaddressed, restoration becomes significantly more costly and less effective over time. Investing now enables preventative, science-based intervention—stabilizing riverbanks, protecting habitat, and preserving water quality for downstream communities before further loss occurs.
