Sources of Strength empowers a well world by building cultures of belonging and strength that prevent crisis before it begins.
About Sources of Strength
Sources of Strength is an upstream, strength-based suicide prevention organization dedicated to building resilience, connection, and belonging in schools and communities. For more than 25 years, we have partnered with young people and trusted adults to strengthen protective factors such as positive relationships, healthy coping, and help-seeking. Our peer-led model harnesses the power of social networks to create positive cultural change at a population level. Recent randomized controlled trials have shown a 29% reduction in suicide attempts and lower suicide mortality in schools implementing Sources of Strength, underscoring the promise of upstream prevention. Our vision is to empower a well world by creating environments where people feel connected and supported long before a crisis emerges.
Currently, Sources of Strength operates in over 40 states, partnering with schools and community organizations to deliver evidence-based programming that promotes mental well-being and prevents suicide and other adverse outcomes. With programming spanning from K-12, Higher Ed, to Workplace Wellness, Sources is engaged in cultivating the conditions for a more well world.

Evidence of 29% Reduction in Probability of Teen Suicide Attempt
In 2025 the American Journal of Preventative Medicine published a research trial demonstrating a 29% reduction in the probability of a new suicide attempt for schools implementing the Sources of Strength program compared with a control. A simulation analysis conducted by the University of Rochester shows this data results in an anticipated 30 prevented suicide attempts for a typical high school over a two year implementation window.
Statistically Significant Reductions in Suicide Mortality
In 2023 the Journal of Injury Prevention published a pooled analysis of 3 randomized control trials conducted on Sources of Strength, spanning over a decade and 40,000 student years of exposure to the Sources of Strength program. This was the first universal intervention to show a statistically significant reduction in youth suicide mortality through a randomized control trial.
